Katakai Festival Fireworks Display

The fireworks of the Katakai Festival have a history of 400 years. After the main event, see Japan’s largest firework: the yonshakudama. The night sky is painted with giant wheels in a way only the fireworks town of Katakai can do.![]()

Urasa Bishamon Shrine Naked Shoving Festival
Starting the evening of March 3, half-naked men covered in water cheer “sanyo sanyo” while shoving each other. This festival is to pray for a bountiful harvest, household safety, and traffic safety. It is known as one of Japan’s Three Unique Festivals.![]()

Mukonage/ Suminuri Festival

The village’s recently married young men get tossed 3-5 meters off a cliff into a snow bank. Afterwards, the men paint their heads in charcoal made by burning sacred earth together with snow.![]()
